Project Overview
The Makerhoods Coworking Space is a (proposed) was to incorporate the existing architecture into the modern ideas of exhibition, event holding, and coworking. In addition, the project’s main brief was to keep the previous owners’ entrepreneurial spirit and sense of work into the given spaces.
In 1888, the Krueger-Scott Mansion was built and located near the heart of Newark, New Jersey by beer baron Gottfried Krueger. After many years, the mansion was then bought by Newark’s first African-American female millionaire Madame Louise Scott in 1958 to be used as a beauty school and her means of residence until 1982. After Scott’s passing, the mansion’s ownership was passed to the city of Newark, where the exterior was stabilized, but then left vacant after previous plans to turn the house into an African-American cultural center were frozen.
After being abandoned for many years, the Makerhoods Company has decided to turn the building into a coworking space while building a modern apartment complex on the same lot, focusing on building a supportive community of local makers, creatives, entrepreneurs, and residents. Currently behind the mansion, the community hosts apartments, Maker shops, demonstration and commercial kitchens for food Makers, and a courtyard for community events.

01 Public Coworking Space
The first floor is opened to the public, allowing the visitors and residents of Newark to find a casual place to work, learn about the history of this mansion, or grab a drink.
Entry Exhibition
As soon as visitors walk in the building, they will be greeted with the history of the Krueger-Scott Mansion. Photographs will be shown on the walls, and chairs mimicking salon hair dryers will provide a listening experience that can only be heard while being seated.
A Makerhoods app is proposed that allow visitors to scan a custom QR Code throughout all the mansion, providing interaction with the exhibitions, learning about the Makers and the Makerhoods, and as well as allow Makers to schedule rental spaces and book office spaces.
Grand Coworking Room
Entry Exhibition
As the original "main room" in the mansion, this coworking space will provide a sophisticated and contemporary take on the mansion. The artwork shows the pre-renovated stairs to add a juxtaposition between new and old.
The Louise Scott Library
Dedicated to one of Newark’s hardworking women, the library will be dedicated towards individual to small group seating. The seating in the center utilizes the unique space within the mansion, allowing users to be engulfed in their work and space.
The room connects to another room, dedicated to larger groups who may want to casually meet, such as book clubs.
The Krueger Pub
Entry Exhibition
Heavily dedicated to the mansion’s beer history, the kitchen will host the event center. People will be able to rent out the space as necessary, and food and drinks will be served throughout the day to guests.
The walls will embellish the original Gottfried Krueger poster, as well as a customized toile as the main wallpaper.
Staircase to Second Level
Going up to the second level, the walls will act as a timeline. As you rise up the stairs the history follows you, taking you from the past up towards the present.
02 Rentable Office Spaces
Office owners will be bringing their own furniture to furnish their spaces. Highlighted red in the plan is what the Makerhoods will provide.
Lounge and Conference Space
The second floor lounge and conference space is dedicated to the workers who are renting the office spaces. The gallery wall in the center of the lounge space gives a peek into who is renting out the offices, allowing for visitors to understand what businesses are local to Newark.
03 Makerhoods Company Office
This floor is reserved for the members of the Makerhoods community only, giving them a dedicated space to plan events, work on physical projects, and collaborate.
